I’m Shira Boss, an author, former financial journalist, and mom of two in Manhattan. Contact me at: shira (at) zerocostkids (dot) com. (Media, please see the message at the bottom of this page.)
I started Zero Cost Kids to help you do things differently than the usual in our culture. I believe kids don’t have to be expensive. That we should try our hardest to spend as much time as possible raising our kids (quantity time). That kids thrive on simplicity, free time, a nurturing home and most of all, togetherness.
Our family of 6 (Bob and I, two sons and two whippets) live in two rooms, less than 650 square feet. The only door is to the bathroom. Our home is our haven.
We don’t plan on ever moving. Small space living frees up energy and money and allows our family to thrive. I’ve got a lot of ideas about how to make small space living work for your family, too! Here’s a whole series about it.
I’ve been thinking about, researching, and reporting on ways to save money and manage household finances for over 15 years – including for the New York Times, Forbes.com, Good Housekeeping, NPR and CNN. I wrote the book Green With Envy: Why Keeping Up with the Joneses is Keeping Us in Debt. (And I have a children’s book coming out next summer about a boy who builds treehouses!)
Managing money is a passion of mine – especially as it relates to lifestyle choices. I’d like to help you simplify your life with children, spend less and have more.
Bob and I have always been a little different. Neither one of us has ever had an office job. Bob grew up building treehouses in Central Park (on our first date he asked, “You’ve never slept in a tree?”) – he still climbs trees every day, as an arborist.
We love New York but have both always had the dream of building a little getaway cabin in the Catskills. We love to disappear into the mountains with backpacks, drink from springs and sleep on the ground.
Our boys were born at home. We share a family bed. The kids eat what we eat. We trade off childcare and working. Parenting is exhausting no matter how you do it, but we see this time as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to focus on what matters most of all, raising thriving kids.
